Most people who come in about their jowls have been looking at the same thing in the mirror for a year or two before they say it out loud. The line along the jaw used to run in one clean sweep, and now it breaks just in front of the chin. It shows up in photographs taken from below, and in the little video-call window where you can see yourself.
I am Natasha. I carry out every treatment at House of Glam HQ myself, and filler for the lower face is one of the treatments I am asked about most. It is also one of the most oversold. So this is the plain version: what a jowl actually is, where the filler goes, what it will not do, and what each option costs here. Every price is published, where most Portsmouth clinics quote only after a consultation.
What a jowl actually is
A jowl is not one thing, which is why one treatment does not fix it for everyone. Three changes happen at different speeds. The skin loses some of its elasticity. The fat pads that used to sit high in the cheek slide down and forward. And the bone under the chin and along the jaw slowly loses a little of its projection. Projection at the point of the chin is its own treatment, priced on its own: see what chin filler costs in Portsmouth.
What you end up with is a small dip just in front of the jowl, called the pre-jowl sulcus, with the soft tissue sitting behind it. That dip is the part people miss. A jowl reads as a bulge partly because of the hollow next to it, not only because something is sagging. Filling the hollow is often what makes the difference, and it is a very different job from trying to lift the bulge.
Can fillers get rid of jowls?
No. Filler does not remove a jowl, and anyone promising that is selling you something I would not sell you.
What filler can do is rebuild the dip in front of the jowl and restore the edge of the chin and jaw, so the eye reads one continuous line instead of a step. On an early or moderate jowl that is frequently the whole difference, and it looks like nothing much was done, which is the point.
On skin that is genuinely loose and heavy, filler adds weight to the part of the face that is already coming down. It makes the lower face fuller rather than firmer. If that is what I see when I assess you, I will say so and I will not take the booking. A treatment that will not work is not worth your money, and it is not worth my reputation either.
Where the filler actually goes
Rarely into the jowl itself. There are three places I would look at first, and which one matters most is different for every face.
The pre-jowl hollow and the chin. Treated together, because a chin that has lost projection drags the whole lower third down with it. Rebuilding both at once is what turns a wavy jaw edge back into a line. This is the treatment most people actually want when they come in asking about jowls.
The jawline. Placed deep along the line from the angle of the jaw to the chin, which sharpens the border and gives the soft tissue somewhere to sit. I have written separately about jawline filler, its real risks and every price.
The cheek. Counter-intuitive, but support higher up takes some of the weight off the lower face. If the cheek has flattened, treating the jaw alone can look bottom-heavy. There is a longer piece on what cheek filler lifts and what it costs.

Are fillers or anti-wrinkle injections better for jowls?
They do different jobs, and only one of them is about jowls at all.
Filler replaces volume and rebuilds structure. Anti-wrinkle injections relax a muscle. You will see the second called Botox online, which is one brand of botulinum toxin and a prescription-only medicine, so it is advertised as anti-wrinkle injections.
The place they get confused is jaw slimming. Relaxing the masseter, the chewing muscle at the back of the jaw, narrows a wide lower face over a few weeks. That is a real treatment and I offer it at £180. What it does not do is lift a jowl. If your lower face is wide because the muscle is bulky, it helps. If it is soft because volume has gone, relaxing a muscle does nothing for it, and on some faces reducing the muscle makes the soft tissue in front look slightly more obvious.
Anti-wrinkle injections also carry a £25 prescriber consultation, which is legally required before a first treatment and paid once per prescription period, and a complimentary review at 14 days. Filler does not have that review, because filler settles differently. I judge a filler result at around two weeks instead.

Two of those six are on the list precisely because people ask for them and they are usually the wrong answer. Fat dissolving under the chin works on a pocket of fat, and the course price is the one worth knowing. It has no effect on loose skin, and if the problem is laxity it can leave things looking emptier. Skin boosters such as Profhilo improve how skin looks and feels. They do not sharpen a jawline, whatever the before-and-after grids suggest, and I would rather tell you that before you spend £185 than after.
What filler will not do for jowls
It will not tighten skin. Nothing injectable tightens skin.
It will not give you the jawline you had at 25, because the change is structural and filler works with what is there rather than replacing it.
It will not hold if you keep adding to it. The lower face is one of the places where too much shows first and shows badly, so I place conservatively and would rather see you back in a few weeks to add a little than take away what we have both paid for.
And it is not a facelift. If the skin is genuinely loose, the honest answer is surgical, and that is a conversation with a surgeon rather than with me.
How long do jowl fillers last?
In the chin and along the jaw I would expect 12 to 18 months, because a firmer filler placed deep against bone moves less than filler placed in a mobile area such as the lips. Across the face generally the range is wider, somewhere between 9 and 18 months, and it depends on the area, the product and how quickly you metabolise it.
It does not vanish on a date. It softens, and most people come back when the jaw edge starts to blur rather than when it has gone completely. Topping up before it disappears usually needs less product than starting again.
How risky is chin filler?
The chin and jaw are treated deep, against bone, which is one of the more predictable places to work. The common after-effects are bruising, swelling and tenderness for a few days, and occasionally a firm area that needs massaging or, rarely, dissolving.
The serious risk with any filler is a blood vessel being blocked, which is why the areas around the nose and between the eyebrows are the ones practitioners treat with the most caution. It is also why I only use CE-marked hyaluronic acid fillers, blended with lidocaine, from ranges such as Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero. They can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. I do not use collagen-stimulating or permanent fillers at all, in any area, because a result you cannot reverse is a result you have to live with.

How much do jowl fillers cost in the UK?
I can only tell you honestly what I charge, which is why the table above exists. Quotes differ so widely because clinics are pricing four things at once: how many millilitres, which area, which product, and what is included in the appointment. A price of £190 for pre-jowls and chin and a price given only as a starting figure are not comparable, even if the number looks similar.
If you are comparing, the question worth asking is not what the headline price is. It is what you get for it, whether the consultation is charged separately, and what happens if you want the result reversed.
What the first appointment involves
A consultation on its own is £15, booked on Fresha and deducted from the treatment if you go ahead. If you book the treatment directly, we do the assessment at the start of that appointment and there is no separate fee.
I look at the whole lower third before I suggest anything, because the chin, the jaw and the cheek all affect each other. Treatment takes around 30 to 60 minutes with numbing cream first. You can expect some swelling for a couple of days, and the shape settles at about two weeks, which is when I would want to see a photograph or see you again.
