Marionette lines are the two lines that run down from the corners of your mouth towards your chin. The name comes from the hinged jaw on a puppet, which is a grim thing to call something that genuinely upsets people, but it has stuck.
Almost everyone who asks me about them says a version of the same sentence: they look fed up in photographs when they feel perfectly fine. The crease casts a shadow and drags the corner of the mouth down, and a downturned mouth reads as a mood whether or not you are in one.
Marionette line filler is £150 at House of Glam HQ in Southsea. One area, booked and priced on its own, and you can see the price before you speak to anyone. Below is what it does, what it costs, what it will not do, and the times I would tell you not to bother.
What marionette lines actually are
Three different things get talked about as one, and working out which one you have decides what you book.
Nasolabial folds run from the sides of the nose down to the corners of the mouth. Marionette lines carry on from those corners, down towards the jaw. Jowls are different again: that is skin and fat that has dropped along the jawline, not a crease at all.
They turn up together because one thing causes all three. The mid-face loses bone, fat and elasticity, the tissue slides downwards, and it gathers where the skin is tethered to what is underneath. That is also why treating one area sometimes softens another without the second area being touched.
If the lines you mean start at your nose rather than your mouth corners, read my guide to nasolabial fold filler instead. If what bothers you is the heaviness along the jaw, jowl filler is the one to read.
Do fillers work for marionette lines?
For the crease and the shadow, yes. Filler is a gel placed under the line that lifts it back towards the level of the skin either side, so the shadow goes and the mouth corner stops being pulled down into a dip.
It works best on a line that is a real crease with volume loss behind it. It works least well on thin, crepey skin at the corner of the mouth with nothing underneath to support, and it does nothing at all for skin that has simply gone slack.
So the useful answer is: it depends what I find when I look at your face. If the problem is laxity rather than lost volume, I will tell you, and I will not sell you a syringe to prove a point.
Marionette line filler prices in Portsmouth
Every price on my menu is published, where most Portsmouth clinics quote only after a consultation. These are the lower-face prices at House of Glam HQ in Southsea, and the price you see is the price you pay.
| Treatment | Price |
|---|---|
| Marionette lines, one area | £150 |
| Nasolabial folds, one area | £150 |
| Chin filler, 0.5ml | £130 |
| Chin filler, 1ml | £150 |
| Pre-jowls and chin, treated together | £190 |
| Jawline filler | £160 |
| Cheek filler | £160 |
| Consultation on its own, deducted from your treatment | £15 |
Plenty of people want the folds and the lines done in the same visit, because they are continuous and treating only half of the run can look odd. Each area is booked separately, so the arithmetic is simply one price plus the other.
| Two areas in one appointment | Price |
|---|---|
| Marionette lines and nasolabial folds | £300 |
| Marionette lines and chin, 0.5ml | £280 |
| Marionette lines and cheeks | £310 |
How much does a marionette line filler cost in the UK?
You will mostly be given a range for this one, because a lot of clinics price after they have seen you rather than before. A range is not much help when you are sitting at home working out whether you can afford it this month.
Here it is £150 for the area, and Klarna spreads any treatment over three monthly payments.
How much does it cost to fill out marionette lines?
One area at £150 covers the marionette lines themselves. If the folds above them are part of what bothers you, that is a second area at £150. At the consultation I will tell you which areas I would treat, how many millilitres, and the exact price, before anything is injected. If I think one area will do what you want, I will say so, even though it means you spend less.
Where the filler goes, and why not straight into the line
Packing a deep crease full of filler is how you end up with a ridge. The line itself is a tether; the thing that created it is the tissue either side of it sliding down.
So most of the work is support. Filler goes in to rebuild the chin and the area just ahead of the jawline, so the mouth corner has something to sit on again, with a smaller amount along the line to soften whatever is left. Cheeks matter here too, for the same reason in reverse: volume higher up lifts everything below it, which is why cheek filler often improves the lower face without the lower face being treated.
Everything I use is CE-marked hyaluronic acid (Juvederm, Restylane or Belotero), blended with lidocaine so it keeps numbing as I work, and it can be dissolved if you change your mind.
What marionette line filler will not do
It will not tighten loose skin. Filler adds volume. If the skin itself has lost its elasticity, adding volume under it can make the sagging more obvious rather than less, which is exactly the conversation I would rather have before you have paid me.
It will not lift a jowl. A jowl sits along the jaw and it is tissue that has dropped, not a line. Filler can blur the step between the jowl and the chin so the jawline reads as one continuous edge, and that is often enough, but it does not remove anything. The detail and every price is on the jowl filler page.
It will not stop the lines coming back. Filler is temporary and ageing carries on underneath it. When it goes, you are back where you started, not worse.
And it will not change your resting expression on its own. You may have read about relaxing the small muscle that pulls the corner of the mouth down. That is not on my anti-wrinkle menu at House of Glam HQ. Here, marionette lines are a filler treatment.
How long does filler take to settle in marionette lines?
About two weeks. For the first few days you may have some swelling or a bruise, and the area can feel firm under a fingertip. That is normal and it is not the result. Most people go straight back to their day afterwards, and I ask you to avoid heavy exercise, alcohol and heat, including saunas and hot baths, for 24 hours.
By around the two-week mark the filler has softened and integrated, and what you are looking at then is what you keep. The complimentary 14-day review that comes with anti-wrinkle injections does not apply to filler. For filler, the settled shape is simply judged at around two weeks.
How long do marionette line fillers last?
Nine to eighteen months, depending on the product and how quickly your body breaks it down. The lower face never stops moving, and movement shortens filler’s life, so this area tends to sit nearer the lower end of that than the upper. Cheeks are one of the longer-lasting areas on my menu for the same reason in reverse, because they move less.
A top-up when you want one, not on a schedule. Nobody needs a standing appointment for their face.
What are the best fillers for jowls?
This question follows the marionette one around, because the two areas sit next to each other. A jowl is a different job: hyaluronic acid placed to define the jaw and fill the pre-jowl hollow either side of the chin, so the edge reads as a straight line rather than a scallop. At House of Glam HQ that is pre-jowls and chin together at £190, or jawline filler at £160. The jowl filler guide goes through what it lifts and what it will not.
What happens at your appointment
| Marionette lines | Detail |
|---|---|
| Price | £150 |
| Appointment | 30 to 60 min |
| Settles | 2 weeks |
| Typically lasts | 9 to 18 months |
A consultation on its own is £15, booked on Fresha, and it comes off the price of your treatment if you go ahead. Book the treatment directly and the consultation happens at the start of that appointment with no separate fee. Either way I look at your face and tell you which areas, how many millilitres and the price before anything starts.
Numbing cream goes on first. The filler is lidocaine-blended, so it keeps numbing the area as I work, and most people describe pressure rather than pain. I am the sole practitioner at House of Glam HQ, so the person who assesses you is the person treating you, every time.
If you change your mind
Hyaluronic acid filler is reversible. Hyaluronidase dissolves it, including filler placed somewhere else, and a patch test and consultation at £15 is booked at least a week beforehand. Facial filler dissolving for the chin, cheeks, jawline or nose starts at £180, confirmed at the patch test before anything is injected.
That reversibility is most of the reason I only use hyaluronic acid. You are never locked into a result.
