I am Natasha. I run House of Glam HQ on Auckland Road East and I carry out every laser session myself. Underarms are the area most people start with, and the one I am asked about most, so this is the underarm answer with the prices attached rather than a general page about laser.
One thing to say at the top, because it saves people a message: laser hair removal here is for women.
How much is underarm laser hair removal?
£45 for a single session, or £216 for a course of six, which is six sessions with twenty per cent taken off. Underarms are a small area on my price list and the appointment runs 30 to 35 minutes. Both sides are treated in the same appointment.

What happens at an underarm appointment in Southsea
Your first visit is the patch test and consultation. It is £15, takes about fifteen minutes, and it is one appointment and one charge rather than a consultation fee with a patch test fee behind it. I look at your skin type and your hair, set the SMARTDiode for you, test a small patch, and answer whatever you want to ask. The £15 comes off your first treatment. Shave the underarm the night before or that morning. Do not wax, pluck or epilate for four weeks beforehand, because the laser needs the root still to be there. Keep the area out of the sun and off the fake tan.
On the day you lie on the couch with your arm up behind your head and goggles on. Cool gel goes over the area first, then I work across it with the handpiece, which chills the skin as it fires.
How many laser sessions does it take to get rid of armpit hair?
Six, two to four weeks apart, and then a top-up every twelve to eighteen months.
Six rather than one because the laser only affects a hair that is actively growing at the moment it is treated, and at any given time only a share of your underarm hair is in that phase. Spacing six sessions two to four weeks apart is what catches most of the follicles as they come through. I cannot give you your number before the patch test. Dark, coarse hair on lighter skin needs the fewest sessions, and underarm hair is usually dark and coarse, which is exactly what the laser reads. Hormonal growth, PCOS included, responds well but wants maintenance every eight to twelve weeks after the course rather than a top-up twice a year.
One thing that worries people at about week two: the area can look hairier. It is not growing back. The treated hairs push out and shed over the two or three weeks after a session, and while they are on their way they sit in the follicle looking like stubble. Gentle exfoliation moves them along.
Can laser permanently remove armpit hair?
No, and I would rather say so before you book than after.
What a full course gives is permanent hair reduction, typically 80 to 90 per cent. The hair that does return comes back finer, lighter and slower, and for most people that is the difference between shaving every day and barely thinking about it. If you want every hair gone for good, that is electrolysis, which works follicle by follicle and is not something I offer here. A laser reduces hair. It does not clear it, and I will not tell you otherwise to get the booking.
Is lasering your armpits worth it?
The sum answers it better than I can, and it should be your figures rather than mine. Add up what you spend on razors, cartridges or underarm waxing in a year, put £216 next to it, and decide how many years you want to compare across.
The part that does not show up in that sum is the one clients mention most: the shaving rash and the ingrown hairs. Underarm skin is thin and folded, and a daily razor over it causes a good deal of the soreness and bumpiness people blame on their deodorant. What I would say against it: this is six appointments across three or four months, not one afternoon. If the spacing is not something you can commit to, a course is not the right spend and I would rather you booked single sessions and came back when life is quieter.
What underarm laser hair removal will not do
It will not work on grey, white or very pale blonde hair. The laser finds the pigment in the hair, and where there is no pigment there is nothing to find. I will tell you that at the patch test rather than sell you a course.
It will not stop you sweating. Laser treats the hair follicle, not the sweat gland. Some people say the area feels drier once there is no hair holding moisture against the skin, which is not the same thing and I will not sell it as if it were.
It will not lighten the skin. Darker underarm skin is common and it is usually pigment rather than hair, often after years of shaving and friction. My laser is a hair removal laser. There is no pigment laser and no IPL here, so if the colour is what bothers you rather than the hair, this is not the treatment for it.
And it will not clear an ingrown hair that is already sitting under the skin. What it does is reduce the ones that would have come next.
Does underarm laser hurt?
Most people find it easier than waxing. It is a hot flick rather than a pull, and the handpiece cools the skin as it works. The underarm is more sensitive than a shin because the skin there is thin, so you notice it more, and it is over in minutes. My fuller answer is in does laser hair removal hurt.
Afterwards the area can be pink and warm for an hour or two, and the follicles can look slightly raised. That settles on its own.
Deodorant, the gym and the days either side
Keep the area out of heat and sun for forty-eight hours. No sauna, no sunbed, no hot bath, and no gym session hot enough to have you sweating into a freshly treated underarm.
Between sessions, shave whenever you need to. Shaving undoes nothing. What does undo it is waxing, plucking or epilating, because they take the root out and leave the laser with nothing to work on at the next appointment.
Put sun cream on the area if it is going to see sun, and leave the fake tan off.
Who I would say no to
Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding. Anyone with a fresh tan, a recent sunbed or fake tan on the area. Anyone taking a medicine that makes skin more sensitive to light, which is a conversation for the patch test rather than a surprise on the day.
