What Is Anti Wrinkle Injections

You’re probably here because you’ve started noticing the same lines in the mirror. The crease between the brows when you’re concentrating. The forehead lines when you raise your eyebrows. The little lines at the sides of the eyes when you smile. And you want a plain English answer before you go anywhere near a needle.

I’m Natasha, sole practitioner at House of Glam HQ in Southsea, Portsmouth, and I’ve been treating faces for 7+ years. The first thing I tell any first-timer is this: anti-wrinkle injections are far less mysterious than they sound. Once you understand what they do, the whole treatment feels much less daunting.

So What Actually Are Anti Wrinkle Injections

Anti-wrinkle injections are a treatment that relaxes specific facial muscles so the skin above them creases less. That’s the simple version, and it’s often the most readily understood explanation.

If you frown, raise your brows, or squint, the muscles underneath your skin pull. Over time, that repeated pulling starts to etch lines into the skin. At first, you only see them when you move. Later, they can start to hang around even when your face is at rest. That progression is why so many people ask me what age to start anti-wrinkle injections.

It relaxes muscle, it doesn’t fill lines

This is the bit people often mix up. Anti-wrinkle injections do not fill anything. They don’t add volume, and they don’t change the structure of your face.

They calm the muscle, so it stops pulling as strongly on the skin.

That means:

  • Dynamic lines soften, the ones that show when you move your face
  • Skin gets a break, because it isn’t being repeatedly folded in the same place
  • Your result can look subtle, because the aim is softer movement, not a different face

A good first explanation is this: the skin is creasing because the muscle underneath keeps folding it. Relax the pull, and the skin above can look smoother.

Why people call it Botox

A lot of people know anti-wrinkle injections by the brand name Botox, but that’s only one brand of botulinum toxin. If you’ve ever wondered about the wording, I explain that more clearly on my page about whether Botox is the same as anti-wrinkle injections.

In clinic, I keep the explanation very straightforward. Anti-wrinkle injections (commonly known as Botox, the brand name for botulinum toxin) are used to reduce the pull of selected muscles that cause expression lines. That’s why they’re most often used in the upper face. Everything about the treatment at my Portsmouth anti-wrinkle clinic — prices, process, and the 14-day review — is published before you book.

And if someone comes in expecting a filler-style result, I’ll say so. If a line is there because of lost volume or skin quality, relaxing a muscle alone won’t fix that. This treatment works best for movement-related lines.

How They Work and How Long Results Last

A first-timer will often sit in my clinic and ask, “So what is it doing once it’s in?” The simple answer is that anti-wrinkle injections reduce the signal between the nerve and the treated muscle, so that muscle cannot contract as strongly for a period of time.

The result is less repeated creasing in the skin while you make expressions. That is why movement-related lines soften.

The timeline most first-timers can expect

One of the biggest misunderstandings is timing. You do not walk out of clinic looking fully settled that same day.

In practice, I tell clients to expect a gradual change. Some people notice early softening within a few days, but the proper result is usually judged at around two weeks, once the treatment has had time to settle evenly. After that, the effect wears off slowly rather than disappearing overnight.

Here is the practical version:

Stage What you’ll usually notice
First few days Very little, or the start of softening
Around 2 weeks Your settled result
Over the following months Movement slowly comes back
By 3 to 6 months Most people feel the treatment wearing off

That last part matters. The treatment is temporary, and for a lot of first-timers that is reassuring, not disappointing.

You are not locked into a permanent change. You get to see how your own face responds, how much movement you like to keep, and whether you want the same approach again next time. I find that takes a lot of pressure off the first appointment.

A practical rule I repeat often is this. Do not judge the result on day two.

If you want a clearer breakdown of timings, I’ve explained how long anti-wrinkle injections usually last in more detail.

Results also vary for a reason. Treatment area, muscle strength, dose, and your own metabolism all affect how long the effect holds. Someone with very strong forehead movement may notice it wearing off sooner than someone with lighter movement. That does not mean something has gone wrong. It usually means their muscles are more active to begin with.

This is one of the trade-offs I discuss openly in clinic. A lighter, more natural treatment often preserves more expression, but it may not last as long as a heavier approach. For most first-timers, I would still rather start conservatively and review properly than chase a stronger result too early.

Will I Look Frozen The Truth About Natural Results

This is the question I hear most often at a first consultation: “Will I look frozen?”

My honest answer is no, not if it’s done properly and conservatively. The frozen look people worry about usually comes from too much product, poor placement, or treating a face like a template instead of an individual.

What a natural result actually looks like

A natural result still looks like you.

You still smile. You still look annoyed when something is annoying. You still have expression. You just don’t get the same strong folding in the skin, so you usually look fresher and more rested.

The compliment many desire isn’t “Have you had something done?” It’s “You look well.”

That’s the difference.

How I avoid an overdone look

After 7+ years treating real faces, I’d much rather start lighter than go in heavy. You can always add a little if needed. You can’t quickly reverse anti-wrinkle injections once they’re in. They have to wear off naturally.

My approach is simple:

  • Conservative dosing, especially for first-timers
  • Careful placement, based on how your own muscles move
  • A built-in 14-day review, so small adjustments can be made if needed

I’d rather you come back and say, “Could I have a touch more?” than sit there wishing you had more movement.

That review matters. It gives me a chance to see how your face has responded once the treatment has settled, rather than guessing on the day and risking over-treatment.

The goal is rested, not done

Some people do not want movement. That isn’t the look I’m aiming for. My job is to read the face in front of me and treat it in a way that suits that person.

If someone wants a very strong result, I’ll still explain the trade-off. Less movement can mean less natural expression. Most first-timers don’t want that once we talk it through.

If this is your main worry, I’ve written more about it here: will I look frozen after anti-wrinkle injections.

The Most Common Treatment Areas and Why They Work Together

The areas I treat most often are the classic upper-face areas: forehead lines, frown lines between the brows, and crow’s feet.

Those are the places where repeated expression tends to show first. But what matters more than the list of areas is understanding that they don’t work in isolation.

Forehead and frown lines often need a joined-up plan

Experience matters significantly. A forehead isn’t just a forehead. The forehead muscles and the frown muscles balance each other.

If someone asks to treat only forehead lines, I’ll often pause and explain the trade-off. Treating the forehead on its own, without also addressing the frown area, can sometimes leave the brows feeling or looking heavier. That’s why those areas are often better treated as a pair.

I don’t follow a standard map. I watch how your brows move, how strongly the frown pulls, and where the forehead is compensating.

Crow’s feet need a lighter hand

Crow’s feet sit around one of the most expressive parts of the face. And that means they need care.

Too much treatment here can flatten the smile and take away warmth from the eyes. Done well, crow’s feet treatment softens those side lines while keeping the face alive and friendly.

The best result around the eyes is usually the one nobody can spot. You still look animated, just less creased.

The three areas at a glance

Area What causes the lines My main consideration
Forehead Raising the brows Balance with the frown muscles
Frown lines Pulling the brows together Brow position and tension
Crow’s feet Smiling and squinting Keeping a natural smile

If a treatment plan doesn’t make anatomical sense, I’ll say so. That’s part of doing this properly. Anti-wrinkle injections work best when the face is treated as a moving system, not a set of separate lines.

Your First Appointment What to Expect

You book in, sit down, and the first thing on your mind is usually simple. Will this feel clinical and awkward, or calm and straightforward?

A good first appointment should feel clear from the start. You should know who is assessing you, what is being prescribed, what the plan is, and what result is realistic for your face.

The prescriber consultation comes first

In the UK, anti-wrinkle injections are a prescription-only medicine. That means a face-to-face consultation with a qualified medical prescriber is required before treatment can go ahead.

I am always honest about that step, because first-timers are often surprised by it. It is not pointless admin and it is not an optional extra. It is a safety check to make sure treatment is appropriate for you, prescribed in your name, and carried out properly.

At House of Glam HQ, I arrange that for you. For a first treatment, the prescriber consultation is £25, and the 14-day review is included.

What happens on the day

Once prescribing is in place, I assess your face in motion.

I will ask you to frown, raise your brows, smile, and relax. That tells me far more than a still photo ever could. It shows me how strongly certain muscles are working, where the pull is coming from, and how to keep the outcome looking soft and believable.

The injections themselves are quick. Most appointments are done within 15 to 30 minutes, and you can usually carry on with the rest of your day afterwards.

A first appointment usually includes:

  • A consultation with me about what is bothering you and what you want to look like
  • A facial movement assessment, so I can treat the cause of the lines, not just the line itself
  • The injections into the selected muscles
  • Clear aftercare advice
  • Your included 14-day review, so I can check how everything has settled

What I want first-time clients to know

You do not need to arrive knowing the right areas, the right dose, or the right terminology. That is my job.

What helps is being honest. If your real concern is looking tired, tense, or cross in photos, say that. If you are worried about looking frozen, say that too. I hear it all the time, and it is a sensible concern. The best first appointment is a conversation, not a sales script.

If you want to understand the kind of soft result I mean, my guide to when anti-wrinkle injections start to show, day by day sets out the timeline.

Pricing in simple terms

My prices are £170 for 1 area, £210 for 2 areas, and £250 for 3 areas, and I’ve set those against what anti-wrinkle injections cost across the UK.

Price matters, but it should not be the only thing you use to choose a practitioner. Technique, assessment, restraint, and proper prescribing all affect the result you walk away with. If a clinic explains its treatment process clearly online, it often reflects how they communicate with clients in person as well.

Ready for an Honest Conversation

You might be at the point where you catch yourself in the mirror and wonder whether treatment would help, then immediately worry about ending up looking stiff or overdone. I hear that all the time from first-time clients, and it is a sensible concern.

My job is to give you a clear answer, not push you into booking. If anti-wrinkle injections are likely to help you look fresher and more rested, I will explain how. If I think your concern would be better treated another way, or that now is not the right time, I will say so plainly.

Safety comes first.

In the UK, anti-wrinkle treatment involves a prescription-only medicine. That means a prescriber consultation is part of doing it properly, not an annoying extra step. It protects you. It makes sure the treatment is suitable, your medical history has been checked, and the plan fits your face rather than a standard package.

I treat every client myself as a sole practitioner, in a clean clinical setting, with proper prescribing in place. That matters far more than speed, discounts, or convenience.

If you are still researching, that is a good sign. Good clients usually ask careful questions. They want to know how it works, what can go wrong, and whether the result will still look like them. Those are exactly the right things to ask.

What matters to me in clinic is simple. People should understand what they are agreeing to, what result is realistic, and why a gentle approach usually gives the best outcome.

If you want to ask me your own questions directly, you can. No pressure. No hard sell. Just an honest consultation.
